Great song from Circa Survive's new album Blue Sky Noise. Amazing album as a whole, but this has to be one of my favourites. Circa Survive have such a distinct sound, both Anthony Green's phenomenal voice and the amazing melodies creating the unique ambient rock sound. I had never heard of Circa Survive until last year when I saw them opening for another act. I fell in love when I heard 'In Fear and Faith' from their début album Juturna. Their second album On Letting Go is also full of goodies. Check them out.

I bought this foundation yesterday and it is AH-MAY-ZING!! You only need to use one pump, it's full coverage without feeling like mud, it has a glow to it aaaaaaand you can use it as a concealer too. Um, perfect. Yeah, it's a little on the expensive side... but honestly, I have never found foundation like this. I've used Natio, Scott Barnes and Stila but they feel thick and slimy compared to Hourglass. I won't be able to buy anything for the next few weeks, but it is so worth it. If you are looking for a gorgeous foundation and don't mind spending a wee bit more, check it out. I got mine from MeccaCosmetica in Wellington. LOVE IT!

It has been forever since I posted. I really don't have much to say for myself. Right now, I'm drinking coffee, watching Star Trek VI, recovering from a night on the town with my cousin. Lately I have been hitting the books hard at University. Really not an interesting subject to discuss... well, I do find it interesting which is why I'm studying... but I find that when I try to discuss it with others they zone out and I'm left rambling about social structures that generate inequality and other criminological issues. But I handed in my first honours essay a few days ago. Big achievement. I almost went insane writing it. Considering I'm usually on the brink of insanity, it doesn't take much... What else? I moved out a few months ago. LOVE my new place. It's my 70's style Aspen ski lodge retreat. And with the weather the way it is at the moment, I couldn't be happier with that description. The only thing I miss is a dryer. Clothes don't dry to well here in the winter. And I HATE damp. But everything else is easy. Shopping, bills, cooking. My flatmate is awesome. We've been friends since we were 5 so we get on really well. I miss my little brother. He moved up north for his degree. Sucks we can't hang out as much as we used to. My older brother has gone to the States for 3 months so I'm totally jealous. Can't wait until this year of study is finito. I'm going to go on holiday. Hopefully Europe. I just need to get out for a bit. Only like a month or so. I'm thinking Greece or somewhere Mediterranean. And so that's me.

I discovered this snack while I was really hungry, but didn't want a big meal... and it had to be something sweet but not too calorie-heavy (I know, not fussy at all...)

Spoon about 3-4 heaped spoons of natural greek acidophilus yoghurt.
Cut up a banana on top.
Drizzle with a thin honey.
(Optional) crush natural cashews on top.

So delicious.
Fills you up, it's sweet and pretty!

I haven't posted in a while. I'm sort of procrastinating. What better way to burn some minutes then talk about some of the things I'm really into right now...

1. Songs: 'Question' - Ladi6, 'Right as Rain' - Adele, 'Dstryr and Dstryr' - Lostprophets, 'On to the Next One' - Jay Z, 'Nothing on You' - B.O.B ft. Bruno Mars
2. Colours: Purple and grey (especially together), neutrals (really light pinks and golds)
3. Clothes: Leggings and anything with zips (tops, dresses, etc.)
4. Makeup: au natural - either really natural browns and golds or nothing at all! Although for lips I'm liking a sheer red/plum colour (just got a new Benefit Silky Finish lippy in Fruit Cocktail... yummy sheer sparkly plum).
5. TV Shows: Stargate Universe, Doctor Who (absolutely loving Matt Smith), Most Haunted (just for fun), Private Practice (wasn't much of a Grey's Anatomy fan, but caught myself becoming involved in the spin off...), Brothers and Sisters (also just fell into this one, but I like it)
6. Books: Virtual Equality: The Mainstreaming of Gay and Lesbian Liberation by Urvashi Vaid (it is for my research thesis, but I am really enjoying it. So eye opening. Good read too not like complicated academic mush)
7. Tweeting: its just so damn addictive. Follow me!
8. Food: Pea and Ham soup. Actually addicted. It is so, so, so, so good.
9. Drink: It was Lipton Iced Green Tea for a while, but now I'm back to blue Powerade. It looks so unnatural it must be good for you right?

Nine is a good number to stop. I'm running out of things I'm loving. Plus the rugby is on.

Recently I joined dailybooth.com. It's basically a site where you take a photo of yourself doing whatever you happened to be doing at that particular time (or what you staged yourself doing) and just like twitter, people you follow/follow you and pretty much anyone around the world can comment or post a picture back. It's actually quite a strange experience. I don't know exactly why I joined up. I have 2 followers, one of them is me. To be honest I don't know how I ended up following myself, but my follower count is so pathetic I'd better leave it. It's quite fun to post pictures of yourself and have little snippets of conversation with people half a world away. I mostly post pictures of my make-up looks (although I am quite proud of myself for posting pictures where I am not wearing any make-up which, as those who know me can tell you, is pretty rare). I find these new social-networking sites so intriguing which I guess is one of the reasons I join them (that, and some strange narcissistic need I am fulfilling). It really is a breakdown in boundaries. Social, territorial, you name it... it's broken. On these sites, especially photo sharing ones, there are no territorial constraints, cultural and language barriers don't seem to be an issue. Some people really put their lives out there for everyone to see. I doubt 20 years ago people were sharing their deepest thoughts freely with anyone who cared to see. I think it's pretty wicked that people can connect and converse and be uninhibited by race, nationality, time, language, social class etc. It really is becoming an open world.

Oh my. Words cannot describe how much I hate these geezers. I just had my first taste of their 'music' (a term I use very lightly). I have only heard the song once. Never again. Never, never, never. It's a (distasteful) remake of Bowie and Mercury's Under Pressure. I LOVE the original. I'm even a fan of the MCR/The Used remake. But when it's 'sung' by two Irish brats, mixed with Vanilla Ice and some sort of privileged white boy rap I wish I had done a Van Gough.

I don't know why they're making music. I don't know who told them they could sing. These new music fads are totally beyond me. What happened to music? My brother (who is very talented musician) gets annoyed with the music industry where musical ability is no longer a needed quality. You just need the 'look' or get some Hype behind you (not the talented music producer Hype, the shittier media kind).

I am so excited to see these lovely ladies again! They were a massive hit last season, their new show 'Better Living' is bound to be just as (if not more) impressive. The duo consist of 2009 NZ RAW Comedy Quest winner Sarah Harpur (follow her on Twitter or her blog) and the ever so funny Jim Stanton (also of Comedy Cure fame).

SoShy aka. Deborah Eptsein is a French singer/songwriter. She was recently featured on Timbaland's song 'Morning After Dark' on Shock Value II (2009). I loved her voice on the track. So unique, deep and with substance (unlike Nelly's voice on the track which is cringe-tastically nasal and piercing). So I looked up some of her other music and was completely (but pleasantly) surprised. She has a reggae/hip hop/soul feel which is perfect for showcasing her voice. A soothing 'lounge singers voice' my dad would say. Her single 'Dorothy' is currently making the rounds on the music scene. I think she is definitely a keeper. Can't wait for more. Her debut album is on it's way...

Another Death at Yet Another Funeral?

This confuses the hell out of me.

Death at a Funeral (2007) was an absolutely brilliant British film by director Frank Oz. The story was fantastic. The characters impeccable. The comedic timing bang on. So why on earth do the American's have to remake it? I've never been much of a fan of typical 'American' humour. But there are a few American films that I have enjoyed and some British films I have not enjoyed so I am not totally biased. But Death at a Funeral was such a British film. The script was British. The setting was British. The characters were inescapably British. It worked because it was British. From what I've read of the 2010 American remake I'm sure it will make a complete mockery of the whole thing. Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence? Really? They can be hilarious in their respective comedic fields, but this story doesn't lend itself to their slap stick style. If you've seen the 2007 version you know none of the characters were outwardly funny. The script wasn't necessarily 'comedic', rather the comedy was hidden in the events and circumstances surrounding this family.

I think this remake will be a cheap version of the original. The subtlety and comedic artistry of the first movie will be replaced by mediocrity and cheesy lines in the second.

If you like smart comedy watch the original.

If you want a crappy American flick... it's out later this year.

More food for thought...

I was watching Nigella Feasts the other day (I love her!) and she said something that really made me nod my head along... since when did food become classified as 'good' or 'bad'? It's all food. Yes, some foods have bigger fat and sugar content... but if you eat lots of any food you will put on weight. Sometimes you just need some chocolate to keep you sane. Why should you feel bad about it? That's where eating disorders start. Why is it that disorders like bulimia and anorexia are only found in modern 'Westernised' civilisations? Look at how food it advertised and talked about. It's like candy is a walking time bomb or bread is poison. Yet in cultures that are not considered westernised there have been no (to my knowledge/research) recorded cases of eating disorders. Food is fuel. Nourishment. Enjoyment. Families and communities revolve around growing, harvesting and eating. I think we need to chill out on the food talk. We need to slow food down. It needs to be enjoyed, savoured and shared. FOOD IS NOT YOUR ENEMY!

I caught this on TV the other day. Alesha Dixon (singer in Misteeq and now a stunning solo artist) investigates the current media OBSESSION with photoshopping images and presenting them as the beauty standard. She also talks to real women + girls who are affected by these images. It's scary to think how taken in we all are with 'beautiful' images. It's also sad to think that we crave or idolise these images so much, that anything less than what we are shown is ugly.

Very thought provoking.

Lucky Number 9...

9 seems to have been a popular number lately for movies. First there was the brilliant 'District 9' directed by Neill Blomkamp and produced by New Zealand's very own Peter Jackson... or is that Sir Peter Jackson now?

Next out is the musical drama 'NINE' with Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Kate Husdon, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren and Judi Dench directed by Rob Marshall. The plot seems to be the typical man and his mistresses story but it does look visually stunning and the music sounds pretty wicked.

Then there is little known '9' which I am super excited for. It is a 3D movie about 9 dolls who were created and given life at the end of humanity (due to an all out war with technology). They then have to save their generation from extinction. Directed by Shane Acker, produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov voices by Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly and John C. Reilly.

I do prefer it to the other 'club' version. However I am just not a fan of the song. To be honest the lyrics annoy me, singing about cheating on a girlfriend but being really sorry, you weren't supposed to find out and when I'm rich it wont even matter... just warms the soul right?

Maybe he realised how well the first version did, so re-releasing it will get him the fame and money he wants so much he even makes it integral to his song (puke)... business smarts or just plain greedy?

I still prefer Imogen Heap's (original) version.

I've spent the past week listening to stories from my parents about people they work with or associate with and all I was thinking was aren't adults supposed to have glimpsed some wisdom or understanding, not act in ways reminiscent of their high school years? Stories about petty workmates who do everything to make themselves seem all important and better than anyone and everyone... everything other than actually doing their job. And then their are those workers who employ their own caste system! In NZ... are you kidding me? The people who are 'better' because they have a higher perceived status than others so are allowed to make their lives hell! I can't really go into detail as I don't want to name these people or put my parents into awkward situations... but it really disgusted me. Especially the caste system person. The absolute racism and hate he directed toward one of my dad's good friends who happened to be Māori and a groundsman was staggering. Why are janitors, groundsmen and custodians labelled as stupid, lower class and unintelligent? Some of the ones I have met (and I have also worked as a janitor) have been the wisest and most caring people. So they may not have a university degree. Some of the stupidest people I have met have a PhD. Qualifications may show people you are smart in a particular area but they do not make you more intelligent, wiser or have more common sense than anyone else.

The more I open my eyes to the world, the more I am disillusioned with people's narrow mindedness and hate. But it does make my resolution to treat all people with love and respect all the more important. I MUST COUNTERACT THE NEGATIVITY!

The Laramie Project

The Laramie Project is a play by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project. It was written in reaction to the 1988 murder of 21-year old student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. He was brutally beaten and left to die alone in a field, simply because he was gay. The play looks at the aftermath of the murder on Matthew's friends and family and the rest of the town. Absolutely stunning, harrowing and thought provoking. You need to see it, read it or watch it (a film was made 2002).

In my 7th form year (2005), my drama class performed the Laramie Project. It was an absolutely amazing experience. I learnt a lot from the play. Introspectively it made me think of prejudices and the absolute hate that some people harbor. And not only individuals, but whole communities. Communities who hide behind religion in the sexual orientation debate. That really baffles me. I was brought up Catholic. For a short while I was involved in Evangelical Christian community. But not once did I ever think that those who were gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender were evil, possessed or diseased human beings. I only use that terminology as a lot of the talk surrounding these issues were discussed in terms of evil spirits or mental illness (so was depression which is another, yet just as ridiculous, story). I guess I just don't understand the religious movements that attempt to convert the whole world, that is their mission. Any means necessary. If they don't, it makes them unworthy. Yet the Catholic values I learnt growing up, and keep with me now even though I am no longer a practicing Catholic, were of acceptance, love, peace. It scares me how you can twist messages of humanity, forgiveness and love into discrimination, hate and condemnation. Matthew Shepard was my age. A student. A friend. A son. He was killed because of one characteristic he had that someone didn't agree with. I can't bring myself to believe that an all powerful and ever-loving God would condone violent actions (both words and behaviour) and look graciously on those who hate and hurt people with such a vengeance.

There needs to be a lot more love and peace. A LOT more.

Be happy that you have found God, spirituality and understand your place in the universe.

Let others find their place in peace.

Starbollocks Coffee...

Oh Starbucks, you make me laugh. Not that you make me happy (your 'coffee' is crap), rather laugh in a cynical disapproving way. I just read a tweet that is making the rounds at the moment about World Aids Day. Obviously a very important topic which I am extremely glad is a well supported and acknowledged issue. (RED) is a well known campaign with many endorsements from celebrities like Bono (U2) to clothing companies like Converse and (this is where the laughing comes in) Starbucks. Starbucks' A Gift of Hope project will donate money when you buy their coffee. Their "Love Project" is a beautiful and ornate campaign with white peace cranes, wishing for love and hope this Christmas for those in Africa with HIV Aids. I only laugh at the irony of this. Yes, support the Aids cause. Definitely. But Starbucks, what about the hundreds of thousands of people in third world countries you have displaced from their homes and livelihoods? Did you forget about them? You know, the families who had been self-sufficient with their land and crops, supporting many generations. The whole communities you forced into bankruptcy and poverty, eventually taking their land and monocropping it. The families who were forced into slums, the children who you forced onto the street just so you could cheaply grow and crop your coffee beans. Remember those guys? The ones you and the IFC's suckered into getting a loan from you (as you increased the prices and tariffs on essential items) but then made repayments so high they lost everything. The same people you occasionally let harvest the crop for money and VERY generously paid them about 3 cents for every bag of beans they harvested.

They don't deserve a mention at Christmas? They don't deserve a prayer, wish or good will thought during the holiday season?

So when you buy your grande soy mocha latte and smile as you support the fight against aids, perhaps you should also spare a thought for the people you are condemning to poverty.

I know I'm thinking about them.

Why not lend your support to corporations that actually help.

Greenpeace, Red Cross, Oxfam.

His latest dive into stupidity are his remarks against Susan Boyle and intellectually disabled persons... yeah, because that's a population who fully deserves hateful remarks...

I really don't like him.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE journalism that asks hard questions and gets to the root of social problems. Society needs people who can ask those in power what the rest of us wish we could.

But thick 'privileged' people like Paul anger me.

His reaction to the controversy (which has led to 200 complaints to the Human Rights Commission) was "duh... what's the big deal... duhhhh... people with intalektuell disap-diseb-disabilateees are called retarded..." (I did edit that comment slightly...)

He needs to be whacked with a trout.

Congrats to TJ McDonald who was just nominated for the 2010 Billy T Award.

The NZ Comedy Trust viewed 13 comedy acts from around New Zealand and whittled it down to just 5 nominees. These 5 will each perform a 1hour solo comedy show in next years International Comedy Festival. The winner will be announced on the 16th May.

TJ McDonald is well known in the Wellington and Auckland comedy circuits as a solo act and in group performances with the Comedy Cure and successful duo Monkey vs. Robot. TJ recently was a finalist in Radio New Zealand's 'Stand Up and Be Counted' comedy series.

I came across this song ('Hide and Seek') after I heard it sampled in Jason Derulo's song 'Watcha Say'... not a big fan of his song but I LOVED the chorus... my brother told me he had heard it as another song so we hunted it down. Now I'm obsessed with it! I had heard of Imogen Heap before (saw a brief interview with her on E!) but had no idea about her style of music. I think it's probably an acquired taste. There are no instruments. Just Imogen singing with an auto-tune vibe happening. But it's so striking!

Jean and Jane Ford created the brand in 1976 in San Francisco.

"who says makeup has to be serious to be good?"

They combined their beauty boutique with a whimsical candy store attitude.

I heard about them through Pixiwoo makeup tutorials on YouTube.

Now I can't stop ordering their stuff!

65th Anniversary of Polish Children Arrival in NZ

This weekend (October 31st - November 1st) marks the 65th anniversary of 733 polish children and 105 adults arriving in New Zealand.

After Germany invaded West Poland in 1939 and the USSR following suit in later that year, taking the East, millions of Poles were deported to concentration and labour camps. My grandfather and his family and my grandmother and her family were among those deported by the USSR. As all their records and belongings were burned during their journey, not much is known about my family heritage. We do know that my grandfather was deported to a labour camp in Siberia and my grandmother somewhere in the Ural mountain region. After months and months of forced labour, starvation and deprivation the Poles were granted 'amnesty' in 1941 by the USSR (as they declared war on Germany). During the long journey through the USSR into Persia, both my grandparents lost their parents and most of their siblings to typhus or malnutrition. Around 6 million Poles perished in total. After a stay in an orphanage in Iran, my grandfather and his sister and my grandmother and her brother along with 800 other Poles made the long journey to New Zealand on the warship General Randall, arriving 1st November 1944. They lived in the Pahiatua Polish camp until they eventually settled in different parts of the country. Both my grandparents made their way to Wellington where they married in 1958. They had 4 children.

My grandparents are the strongest people I know, unaltered by the horrors they lived through. I am proud to be their granddaughter. I can only hope that I can live to be half as strong as they are.

Colour.

Wellington fashion pretty much consists of black and grey. And while, admittedly, I am a fan of the monotone on occasion (or in my blog format)... I do get massive urges to splash out, dye my hair bright orange, wear rainbow leg warmers and roam the streets throwing glitter everywhere... That's why I love designers like Carly Harris who don't believe in the dark side. And although probably out of many price ranges (including my own), window shopping costs surprisingly little and similar items are easily found at Glassons (it's oh so classy... and yes I shop there too). I did buy a dress from her the other week which my bank account nearly divorced me for... but it makes me happy :) I am currently only wearing it around the house as any damage to it would most probably cause my early demise...

Colour can also be found in makeup and ChiChi is the prettiest. Thanks to Alys and Andrea I now have enough eyeshadow to last me and future generations for many, many years.

I think I'd love to visit Japan where colour is the norm and creativity is standard. Perhaps I'll get there one day (once I stop buying expensive dresses...)

Moral of the rant: be colourful, be happy.

I learned today that the ratio 1:1.618 explains perfect beauty of both people and the universe :) The ratio pops up everywhere, the ratio of the width of your nose to mouth is generally 1:1.618, same as your body above your naval to the rest, and in nature like the Nautilus shell, flowers and (apparently) distances between the planets.

So instead of calling people hot/pretty/beautiful... I'm going to start handing out mathematical ratios :)
